Hempfield High School’s Drag Show Enrages Parents Protecting Their Children’s Innocence
A student club’s appalling program has landed Hempfield High School in an explosive situation.

The Hempfield School District is a peculiar place to find a “woke” drama playing out. The district is located in Pennsylvania’s Lancaster County, an Amish-dominated area better known for dairy products than social ferment.

Yet, a student club’s appalling program has landed Hempfield High School in an explosive situation.

On April 25, 2022, the school’s “Gay Sexuality Alliance Club” held a “drag show” in which men dressed as garish and provocative women presented themselves in an overtly sexual manner. According to one report, the entire student body was invited to the after-school event by an announcement during the second period. No permission slip was needed to attend.

One disgusting photo shows the four scantily-clad “performers.” Attire for each is a costume that would be deemed lurid and inappropriate by even liberal school administrators. All four wear heavy makeup, applied in an outlandish fashion.

The only woman in the photo is Kelly Tyson, a now-suspended Hempfield High French teacher. Her clothing is in the rather shabby manner accepted among teachers in public high schools. She wears a broad smile and is comfortable in this bizarre company.

A Convenient Ignorance

According to its members, the club presented two similar shows before this one. However, the administrators feign ignorance. Apparently, they don’t listen to the daily announcements. Their official statement began, “The Hempfield School District administration was made aware of a serious situation that took place at the high school on Monday, April 25, after school hours…. Immediately following the notification, an investigation into the incident began.”

How could such an event be unknown to the administrators? It was announced to the entire student body. Even if administrators ignored the announcement, the “performers” had to enter the school building and go to the room where the show took place.

Such an entrance is more difficult than most people think. Since the Columbine school shooting in 1999, high schools tightly control entry. The only exception is when students enter the building at the beginning of the day. Fifteen or so minutes after the school day begins, only one door remains unlocked. School personnel watch that one door constantly. Anyone who is not a student or member of the faculty must stop, provide identification and get a pass to enter. Four “drag queens” could not have entered the building without being noticed.

Apology or Excuse?

Immediately after disclaiming responsibility, the administrators apologized. “First and foremost, the administration team apologizes to students, parents, and the community on behalf of those involved in this event. We are appalled at what took place and in no way condone this type of activity in our schools. Neither the dress of the invited guests nor the performance was appropriate in our school setting.”

Then, the school officials promised to get to the bottom of this outrageous act. “We are taking the incident seriously in our ongoing investigation and follow-up actions.” They immediately suspended “an individual,” presumably Kelly Tyson. At their May 10 meeting, the Board announced they suspended two unnamed others. Of course, the administrators are sworn to silence. “Since this is a personnel issue, there will be certain information the district is unable to share with the public.”

The most likely explanation is also the simplest. The administration was afraid of approving or forbidding the activity, so they pretended not to know about it. The administrators’ fears are understandable. Having been shorn of any actual authority years ago, they must run the school efficiently without embarrassing the district, its superintendent or the school board.

Three Opinions

However, the fact remains that the club presented students with an indecent and burlesque show, improper for both students and adults. There is no teaching value in turning the school into a brothel. Everyone must be opposed to this assault upon public morals and the corruption of minors.

However, three reactions prevail in a relativistic society that is afraid to affirm a moral law.

First, there are the libertarians, who express an “enlightened” hands-off policy. Several articles quoted Melissa Taylor, a parent who voiced this philosophy. “All they are doing is hurting the kids in that club and the teacher. If your kids aren’t involved in and you’re not giving your permission, why are you getting involved?”

Then, some defend the club, the teacher and the show. They sympathize with the LGBT agenda and “diversity.” One parent, Dianna Allen, laid out this view to a local television station. “I’m upset about the school’s reaction to it. I don’t think it was meant to promote sexuality. I think it’s meant to promote arts and individuality and unifying a diverse community and promoting acceptance.”

Daily Wire interviewed Stacy Hernandez, who presented a considerably more conservative view. “Our schools are overreaching and indoctrinating our children, which has created confusion and stress in the most vulnerable. It is a form of child abuse, and it’s about indecency in our schools and lack of leadership.”

Lancaster Online quoted Meredith Hilt, who laid responsibility squarely at the feet of the administrators. “This never should have happened… If you can’t commit right now to protecting all children, I ask that you resign. Step aside.”

Cam Modern Society Sustain Public Education?

This situation illustrates two problems with the public schools that society has created.

First, these schools operate in a modern society that has abandoned all traditional standards. In a world without right and wrong, all opinions are equal. Any vestige of Christian morality has been deliberately excised. Even the so-called secular or “Enlightenment” values of limited freedom and respect for other people’s rights have nearly vanished in today’s cancel culture.

The first problem causes the second. Without a guiding morality, the schools try to be all things to all people. They pretend to uphold order while tolerating disorder. Emotionalism overshadows reason and logic. Schools pay lip service to the concept of merit while promoting the idea that everyone succeeds. Teachers are expected to provide rigorous coursework that everyone, even the terminally lazy, can do. The student handbooks list rules that no one intends to follow or enforce.

Thus, schools cannot succeed because they have no standard of success. In such an atmosphere, chaos thrives, and indecency is promoted under the guise of tolerance. Right or wrong has nothing to do with the ultimate decision. Neither children nor societies thrive under such conditions.

Fortunately, concerned parents put a stop to the shows in Lancaster. It shows that these evil displays can be successfully opposed. Parents need to be vigilant because the other side loses no opportunity to promote its nefarious agenda.
