Five Reasons Zohran Mamdani Will Not Save New York

It is official. On January 1, 2026, an avowed socialist took the helm of New York City.

Back in November, Zohran Mamdani opened his victory speech by quoting Eugene Debs, an early American socialist agitator: “I can see the dawn of a better day for humanity.”

However, the facts are clear: this man will not be bringing a new dawn with his mayoralty. Sunset is long gone, and darkness is set to envelop America’s largest city.

Here are five reasons why the election of Zohran Mamdani will destroy New York.

Number #1: Democratic Socialism Is Not Socialism Lite

Zohran Mamdani is a proud member of the Democratic Socialists of America. Many leftists are desperate to make a distinction between socialists and democratic socialists. The additional adjective is a feeble attempt to water down his Marxist game plan.

However, Mamdani himself has revealed that his socialist doctrines are not watered down—they are pure concentrate. In 2021, while addressing young socialists during a digital conference, he acknowledged that the end goal of socialism is to “seize the means of production.”

This is not socialism lite. It is not even moderate. This philosophy comes straight from The Communist Manifesto.

The dangers of a full-fledged socialist government need no introduction. Failed regimes in Venezuela, Cuba and Cambodia have already done that sufficiently.

Reason #2: Socialism Begets Authoritarianism

While socialists claim to look after the “little guy,” historical repetitions indicate otherwise. Anywhere socialism can be found, an authoritarian dictator is never far behind.

Just take a look at Joseph Stalin, Adolf Hitler, Mao Zedong, Pol Pot, Fidel Castro, Nicholas Maduro and Kim Jong Un. All of these men, under the banner of socialism, ruled with iron fists.

Why is this the case? Because the right to private property is ingrained in every man’s soul through natural law. This order cannot be overturned merely by persuasion, as it goes directly against human nature. To sidestep this problem, leaders of the socialist movement almost always resort to coercion. It is the only way to get people on board.

Reason #3: Socialism Forces the Movers and Shakers to Move

Large business owners are declared public enemy number one once socialists take power. Anyone with money suddenly becomes a persona non grata. The state then positions itself as a modern-day Robin Hood, confiscating from the rich to theoretically give to the poor. As a result, unreasonable tax hikes make owning a large business untenable.

There is one crucial oversight here. By making business owners poor, what happens to the businesses? Production is reduced, which means job opportunities are also reduced. It is not long until pay cuts and mass layoffs enter the scene. Unemployment begins to skyrocket, but there are no longer any jobs to be filled.

Before you know it, a severe economic depression has arrived. It is at this point that the socialists deliver their campaign promise. Everyone becomes absolutely equal… equally miserable.

Naturally, conditions like these would frighten any business owner. With initiative no longer rewarded, many will decide to pull up their stakes and flee.

Reason #4: Rent Freezes Result in Rodent-Infested Apartments

Affordability is undoubtedly a problem in New York—one that Mamdani turned into his top campaigning issue.

To solve this problem, he proposed rent freezes. This would prevent landlords from raising the costs of monthly lease payments on all rent-subsidized apartments.

Sounds nice. But this “solution” is nothing new. It had already been attempted by Mayor Bill de Blasio ten years ago. Right before leaving office, a federal survey on New York’s housing situation was completed. The results were not too flattering.

It showed that rent-stabilized apartments had twice as many rodents, leaks, heating breakdowns, broken plaster, elevator outages and mold.

A little foresight could have prevented these predictable consequences. When socialist mandates force property owners to rent their apartments at a loss, how can they be expected to afford basic maintenance?

If rent freezes caused apartments to deteriorate five years ago, will they work now?

Reason #5: Without God, Everything Is Impossible

For any institution to function effectively, it must be subservient to God and in accordance with His commandments. Zohran Mamdani promises to do neither.

During his victory speech, he revealed the godless direction he wants to take New York: “We will prove that there is no problem too large for government to solve.”

Now compare this with the words of Pope Pius XII in Summi Pontificatus:

“To consider the State as something ultimate to which everything else should be subordinated and directed, cannot fail to harm the true and lasting prosperity of nations.”

Socialism can never be accepted as a solution, democratic or not, because it seeks to overthrow He who created everything.

No matter how much Mamdani and his followers may try, the truth remains implacable: “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.” (Psalm 127:1)

The Verdict: Zohran Mamdani will not save New York City. Let us pray that God saves it from him.
