Saint Augustine for the Fragmented

If you suffer from the postmodern fragmentation of the mind, here is a solution for you. It is for all those who feel a bit like a mental Humpty Dumpty, scattered in a thousand directions at the same time. These days, attention spans are only ten times longer than the average television scene change (six seconds). And we think we are experts on some complicated issue after listening to a whole two minute of "in-depth analysis."  However, we have problems in our lives that are not resolved in a minute or two. They require deep, intense thought, and above all, help from great minds.  What do we do to resolve these problems? We look for advice. We talk, listen, and read. We ask: How do other people solve problems of this magnitude? What insights do they offer?

Living to Work, or Working to Live?

All too often, the Catholic observes Sunday by taking the family after morning Mass, to the honest-to-God thrill of a football game. Though full of action it also contains great spiritual lessons.  The story begins with a description of the childhood of Gereon Karl Goldmann, a typical and edifying Catholic family in pre-World-War-II Germany.  Gereon’s mother died while he was still a boy. This triggered a series of graces and trials that led eventually to his ordination to the priesthood.

Finding the Real Soul of the Apostolate

The present scandals in the Church have many people looking for positive solutions to the multifaceted problems which beset the Bride of Christ, not realizing that the true solution will only come from Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, His life within us and fidelity to His teachings. The Soul of the Apostolate is a book, which not only shows how this is possible, but the way it is to be accomplished.

Long Live the Sacred Cross: Long Live Suffering!

"Long live the sacred cross: long live suffering!"  How foreign these words of Saint Veronica Giulani are to our modern ears. Tell-tale examples like widespread abortion and drug use are unnecessary to see that contemporary society will do anything to avoid suffering. However, in turning its back on suffering, it has also turned its back on Our Lord Jesus Christ.
