Cardinal Medina Praises Defending a Higher Law

As the same-sex "marriage" debate rages worldwide, the American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property (TFP) welcomed an encouraging commentary on its 2004 book defending traditional marriage from Cardinal Jorge A. Medina Estèvez.

The Cardinal sent his remarks upon receiving the new Spanish-language edition of the American TFP's book, Defending a Higher Law: Why We Must Resist Same-Sex "Marriage" and the Homosexual Movement. Published by Acción Familia, the TFP's sister organization in Chile, the new book is part of that organization's effort to safeguard traditional marriage in the Andean country. Cardinal Medina is the Prefect Emeritus of the Vatican's Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.

Referring to the book's discussion of homosexuality, the Cardinal writes: "The work you are distributing is a valuable contribution to inform the public on a topic that becomes increasingly relevant since many are expressing support for it [homosexuality] thus corroding the principles of social life founded on the Christian faith and on morals founded in natural law."

The Cardinal decries the efforts of those who would declare homosexual acts a "right" and seek to have such practices recognized and legitimized by civil authority. This runs contrary to the common good to the measure that it "induces people to see with tolerance and complacency attitudes that destroy the concept of matrimony and family, and to place on the same footing institutions in conformity with human nature with others that are crude and aberrant."

"May the Lord bless this effort of clarification and truth for the good of Christian consciences and those of men of good will who believe that human nature and its requirements stem from a loving design of God, Who seeks nothing but man's happiness."

Praise has also come from two other Chilean bishops. Archbishop Antonio Moreno Casamitjana of Sanctissima Concepción wrote that, in face of an aggressive pro-homosexual campaign, "reading this work will help parents and teachers counter the noxious effects of this avalanche on the consciences of children."

Bishop Rafael de la Barra T. of Illapel called the Spanish-language edition of the book "very timely because there is a growing campaign to confuse public opinion about topics relating to sexual morals."
